Egg Laying FAQ

Egg Laying

How old are bearded dragons when they start laying eggs?
Most females are capable and can begin laying after 18 months of age, but some may lay earlier if they reach sexual maturity sooner, some females may never lay infertile eggs.

Do female bearded dragons lay eggs without a male?
Yes. Female dragons can lay infertile clutches without ever being with a male — this is very common.

How can I tell if my bearded dragon is gravid (carrying eggs)?

  • Swollen, round belly (firmer than normal food belly)

  • Restless or digging behavior

  • Reduced or non existent appetite

  • Glass Surfing

  • Straining or Pushing

What should I do when I notice digging behavior?
Provide a lay box:

  • Container large enough for your dragon to turn around in (Non transparent is better)

  • Filled a with moist sand/soil mix (slightly damp, holds a tunnel but not muddy, think sand castles)

  • Depth of at least 8–10 inches

What if my dragon refuses the lay box?
Some females are picky. Try adjusting the substrates moisture or depth, container size, or placement. If she still won’t lay, consult a reptile vet to rule out egg binding. Do not disturb her more than every 2-3 hours. Put her in a non busy room. Make sure the container is escape proof. If she is digging, or you see dirt on her face and back she is looking for a spot to lay.

How many eggs will she lay?
A typical clutch can range from 15 to 30+ eggs, depending on the dragon’s age, size, and health. Infertile clutches usually have fewer eggs.

Do I need to incubate infertile eggs?
No — infertile eggs will not hatch. They should be removed and discarded. If you are unsure of fertility, freeze before tossing.

How do I care for my dragon after she lays?

  • Offer food and hydration right away (calcium-dusted insects and greens).

  • Feel her belly, she will feel very empty, check your dig box for eggs.

  • Provide extra calcium supplementation for the next 1–2 weeks.

  • Ensure basking temps and UVB are correct so she can recover her strength.

  • Be prepared for her to do it again in the next few weeks (this is common)

What is egg binding (dystocia)?
Egg binding happens when a female cannot pass all of her eggs. This is a veterinary emergency. Symptoms include:

  • Straining without passing eggs

  • Lethargy, weakness

  • Loss of appetite

  • Tiny or non existing stools

  • Sunken pads

  • Emaciation

When should I see a vet?

  • If she digs but doesn’t lay within 3 days

  • If she strains and pushes with no progress

  • If she seems weak, stops moving much, or appears to be losing weight.

How often will my female lay eggs?
Females may lay clutches a few times per year. Even without a male, some females will lay infertile clutches regularly especially if overfed.
